Developing the next generation of energy projects in Costa Rica

Danish Capital Partners is part of a broader international consortium working on the development of a portfolio of larger-scale energy projects in Costa Rica.

The consortium is working together with Costa Rica’s Ministry of Energy and ICE – Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad, the country’s public utility company, to explore and develop strategic energy projects supporting Costa Rica’s future energy system and continued transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

The collaboration brings together public-sector stakeholders, local expertise and international industrial, financial and technology partners with the objective of progressing selected projects from development stage towards commercially viable and financeable investments.

From opportunity to bankable project

Large-scale energy projects require much more than a strong technical concept.

From an early stage, commercial structure, financing, contractual frameworks and stakeholder alignment must develop alongside the technical solution if a project is ultimately to become investable and financeable.

As part of the consortium, Danish Capital Partners contributes with project development and financial advisory, helping bridge the gap between early-stage development and projects capable of attracting international financing and industrial partners.

International partnerships

The projects are being developed through close cooperation between public-sector stakeholders in Costa Rica and an international consortium bringing together industrial, financial and technology expertise.

DCP’s role within the consortium is to contribute to the commercial and financial structuring of the projects and help ensure that the development process supports clear risk allocation, appropriate capital structures and long-term bankability.

The ambition is to combine Costa Rica’s energy infrastructure priorities with international technology, capital and project-finance expertise.

Current assignment

The projects are currently under development, and further details regarding technologies, capacity, investment volumes and individual project structures will be disclosed as the development progresses.

Social infrastructure investments

In 2024, AkademikerPension made an initial investment of DKK 130 million in a new residential facility for 46 adults with autism in Hvalsø, near Lejre. At the same time, it signed a long-term partnership agreement covering further facilities across Denmark, with up to DKK 1 billion in targeted investments. Danish Capital Partners found the investor and structured the agreement.

The challenge

Non-profit organisations usually cannot provide the financial security that banks require to build modern, sustainable residential facilities. As a result, few such projects get built, even though they serve some of society's most vulnerable people.

Landsforeningen Autisme and Boligfonden Autisme needed a partner who could close that gap and attract an institutional investor to a project of this size.

Our approach

Danish Capital Partners drew on its experience in project financing of sustainable buildings and social infrastructure. Through its network of institutional investors, it matched the project with the right long-term investor.

AkademikerPension expects the partnership to grow into a portfolio of 5–10 projects worth around DKK 1 billion. "We hope the agreement will eventually result in 5–10 projects and a portfolio of around one billion kroner," said Søren Møller-Larsson, Head of Real Estate at AkademikerPension.

"Danish Capital Partners has been absolutely decisive in making the first facility a reality, and in securing a long-term agreement with such a prominent Danish investor as AkademikerPension," said Thomas Viskum, project coordinator and Head of Det Private Botilbud Højtoft. "They have negotiated a truly unique solution on our behalf that far exceeds our expectations and dreams. Thanks to this partnership, even more people with autism will be able to live in the best possible surroundings for many years to come."

Sustainability and autism-specific design

Sustainability and investments with strong ESG credentials are a guiding principle for Danish Capital Partners and the projects and clients we work with. The architects, Njordrum, have extensive expertise in sustainable care buildings. AkademikerPension is one of Denmark's largest institutional investors and is known for putting ESG at the very top of its agenda.

specialised social infrastructure

Danish Capital Partners has advised on the development and financial structuring of Pindstrup, a new specialised residential care facility for adults with autism located at the former Pindstrup Centre on Djursland, Denmark.

The development has been structured as a long-term social infrastructure investment, with the property held by a private investment vehicle and supported by a long-term lease arrangement with the residential care operation.

Long-term capital for long-term social needs

An important feature of the project is the combination of private investment capital and long-term social infrastructure.

Rather than financing the project as a traditional property development, the investment case is built around the long-term use of the property as specialised residential care infrastructure.

Current status and next phase

The first phase of Pindstrup has been developed and constructed and is currently awaiting the final regulatory approval from the Danish Social Supervision Authority before commencing operations.

Following completion of the approval process, the project is expected to move into its next development phase, expanding the Pindstrup concept further.

Sell Side Advisory biogas plant

Danish Capital Partners acted as sell-side advisor in connection with the sale of a ready-to-build biogas project in Denmark to a UK-based buyer.

Once operational, the facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of up to 8 million M3 methane, positioning the project as a significant renewable energy asset.

The transaction demonstrates DCP’s ability to combine sector understanding, financial structuring and hands-on transaction execution within renewable energy and infrastructure.

Confidential transaction

Further details regarding the project, seller and buyer remain confidential and are expected to be disclosed in 2027.

Interim CFO | Renewable Energy | Asia

Danish Capital Partners was engaged as Interim CFO for an international renewable energy platform with a portfolio of operating assets in Asia.

Going from being a platform and becoming one company – and ultimately prepare the company for a future exit.

The challenge

The platform consisted of multiple legal entities, project companies and operating assets across jurisdictions.

As is often the case when investment platforms grow quickly, financial processes, reporting and governance had developed around individual projects rather than around the platform as a consolidated business.

The shareholders therefore needed stronger financial management and increased transparency across the organisation.

The assignment combines strategic CFO leadership with hands-on execution.

The objective is not simply to improve reporting.

It is to build the financial backbone required for the platform to operate as an independent, professional company.

Financing the energy transition within a regulated utility environment

Danish Capital Partners provides ongoing financial and project advisory to DINForsying, a Danish utility group developing commercial infrastructure projects supporting the energy transition.

The projects are developed alongside the utility’s regulated activities, but are structured and financed on commercial terms, requiring a clear separation between regulated operations, commercial risk and project-specific financing.

The assignment combines project finance, financial structuring and strategic project leadership from early development through financing and execution.
